What is a Public Adjuster?
Public adjusters are often an overlooked part of the claims process. That’s probably because you don’t technically need one in order to file an insurance claim. Contacting your insurance company, filing a claim, and organizing repairs is all possible without a public adjuster. In many cases, however, hiring a public adjuster to represent you through this process is the difference between a job well done, on time, and within budget, and a slow, stressful, and overly expensive slog.
In short, public adjusters represent the claimant during the claims process. This is important, because insurance companies, like any business, work very carefully to minimize costs. It simply isn’t in their interest to pay a claimant any more than the absolute minimum to fix what needs fixing. This attitude filters into every decision made by the insurance company and its representatives.
A public adjuster, on the other hand, is fueled by the exact opposite motivation. They want the claimant to receive enough money to comfortably cover all the costs involved in making repairs.
Very often, a person who has suffered damage to their home—whether by fire, water damage, storm damage, or theft—doesn’t expect to recuperate everything they’ve lost. If the insurance company pays out 80% of what’s needed, then the few hundred, or even thousand, dollars that still need paying can feel like a blessing. After all, it could have been so much worse.
Public adjusters are there to fight for the full 100% payout. That’s their job. On top of that, they manage the claim process from start to finish, assessing damage, sourcing quality contractors, and liaising with insurance company representatives.
At the end of the process, claimants can get back to normal life with peace of mind, knowing that the problem has been well and truly solved.
